Study Description:
The purpose of this study is to learn more about the safety and effectiveness of two investigational medications in treating a type of sleep apnea often seen in patients with certain heart problems. Participants will receive the investigational oral medications or the matching placebo for approximately 1 month every night before going to bed. 75% (3 out of 4) of patients will receive the active study medication and 25% (1 out of 4) of patients will receive the placebo. Participants will be provided with a smart ring to wear on your finger that will monitor your oxygen saturation as you sleep. Before receiving any medication, you will have an in-person medical screening as well as an overnight sleep study conducted in a sleep lab (at no charge to you) to see if you may qualify. Total study duration, including screening, is approximately 10 weeks with 6 doctor’s visits, 5 of these visits will be overnight sleep studies performed in sleep lab. Study procedures and tests will include vital signs, physical examinations, electrocardiograms (ECGs), laboratory and sleep tests. There is no charge to participate in this study and you will be compensated for your time and travel.
Qualifications:
- Should already be diagnosed with sleep apnea
- Should have diagnosis of any of the following medical conditions as well as sleep apnea: heart failure, atrial fibrillation, high blood pressure, or complex sleep apnea or CPAP
- Must already be taking at least 1 blood pressure medication
- Average systolic blood pressure (top #) while on current blood pressure medication should be at least 130
- Average diastolic blood pressure (bottom #) while on current blood pressure medication should be at least 80
- Cannot also be diagnosed with kidney stones, narcolepsy, REM sleep behavior disorder
- No history of stroke, class IV heart failure, heart attack or acute decompensated heart failure (in past 3 months), or shortness of breath while at rest
- Cannot typically smoke more than 10 cigarettes to 2 cigars per day
