The study medication is designed to rebalance the good and bad bacteria in the colon. Participants will receive the study medication or a placebo to take in addition to their current UC treatment for a total of 2.5 months. The initial medication assignment will be chosen at random, and you will not know which treatment you are receiving. However, all participants will receive the study medication during some portion of the study. The total study duration, including screening, is approximately 1 year and 1 month and would include up to 15 clinic visits and 2 phone calls. Study procedures and tests will include blood and stool sample collection for laboratory testing, keeping an electronic diary of your symptoms and medication intake, and undergoing 3 endoscopies with tissue sampling. Eligibility for the study will be determined by the study doctor following one or more in-person screening visits to the clinic. Trial-related procedures and study medication will be provided at no cost. Qualifications: - Must have had UC for 3 months or longer - Experiencing rectal bleeding - Cannot have had a part of your colon removed or any other surgery on the intestines - Cannot also have Crohn's disease
