Study Description: This research study is being done to assess the safety and effectiveness of an investigational study drug or placebo (when taken alongside an approved antidepressant medication) in possibly treating participants with depression who have been unsuccessful in finding an anti-depressant treatment to sufficiently help. Along with the investigational study drug (or placebo), eligible participants will be asked to take an approved antidepressant treatment. The investigational study drug or placebo and the antidepressant medication will be taken once a day orally. The research study will include up to 14 visits at a study center in your location over the 14-week study treatment period. You do not need to have health insurance to participate in this research study as all antidepressant medications, study drug, study-related tests and assessments will be provided at no cost. Participants who qualify may be compensated for time and study-related travel
Qualifications:
- Depressive episode cannot have lasted >2 years
- Current medication has not helped OR has only helped <50%
- Cannot have other psychiatric conditions (bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia, etc)
- Cannot have a history of: heart attack, heart failure, or stroke
